'They went beyond the call of duty': Slate Belt 1st responders honored for saving man's life
To protect and serve and save: three officers from the Slate Belt Regional Police Department jumped into action to save a Wind Gap man's life. On Tuesday, they were honored along with the paramedic and medical team who all responded at the Slate Belt Regional Police Commission Meeting.
The details of what happened on February 7, 2025 are bit blurry for Lewis Greenleaf, but he knows this: "Basically, I went into cardiac arrest, and I had four heroes save my life," he said.
Officer Nicholas Anderson, Officer Anthony Lytle, Sgt. Shawn Moskella, and Paramedic Zachary Gilbert are the four heroes Greenleaf referred to.
That day back in February Greenleaf started having chest pains and called 911. Sgt. Moskella was dispatched and made it to his home first.
"He was waiting for his wife to get home," said Sgt. Moskella. "He said he was feeling a little bit better and that I didn't have to stay on scene."
But, Moskella did stay on scene - literally, a life-changing decision. "He collapsed right in front of me," said Moskella.
Moskella called for an ambulance and backup and got to work. "Luckily, I had medical scissors to cut his shirt open and I started CPR," he said.
Anderson and Lytle arrived and assisted. The three of them were able to shock Greenleaf with an AED.
"It felt like forever, I'll be honest with you," said Moskella.
Paramedics then arrived and took over, but thanks to Moskella and the other officers, Greenleaf had a fighting chance.
"In terms of cardiac arrest, minutes really do matter and every minute you can shave off by adequate CPR and getting the AED applied really does save a lot of lives," said Gilbert.
Greenleaf said, "They did more than their job in this case, they went beyond the call of duty, and I appreciate that."
Moskella even visited Greenleaf in the hospital several times.
"Dropped off a card that the officers all signed," said Greenleaf. "There are no words, there are no words."
