‘Brooke Hearts Your Heart’ returns, educating Trail Blazers fans on heart health
February is American Heart Month, and in recent years, Portland Trail Blazers and NBA fans have learned more about heart health awareness during February because of sideline reporter and host Brooke Olzendam’s foundation – Brooke Hearts Your Heart.
Brooke Hearts Your Heart launched in February of 2020 in partnership with the American Heart Association to help spread awareness and guidance of heart health as well as raise money for the American Heart Association.
Olzendam and the foundation have raised more than $150,000 and has shared her personal story and in return has learned many more stories of lives changed by Brooke’s openness to share his story of loss.
The Blazers on-air personality has made it a mission to inform Trail Blazers fans and the Portland community about the warning of signs a heart attack, as well as knowing CPR.
The first $5,000 in donations made through Brooke Hearts Your Heart will be matched by the Trail Blazers. This year’s goal is to raise $15,000 through donations and proceeds from the Brooke Hearts Your Heart beanie.
On Friday, Olzendam will be wearing red on the Trail Blazers broadcast as Portland hosts Memphis at Moda Center because Friday, February 6 is National Wear Red Day. This is a day to “Go Red for Women” as the American Heart Association encourages people to wear red in support of women’s heart health.
Here are a few Go Red for Women cardiovascular statistics provided by the American Heart Association:
-
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women.
-
Nearly 45% of women over age 20 are living with some form of cardiovascular disease.
-
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of maternal death in the U.S.
-
Women are less likely than men to receive bystander CPR and less likely to survive an out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest.
-
Only 38% of cardiovascular clinical research trial participants were women as of 2020.
