Myles Copeland is a firefighter who also plays for the Toledo Glass City Basketball Club.
His recent win on the court had nothing to do with the game, but everything to do with being in the right place at the right time.
During a game in New York two months ago — which he was able to attend at the last minute after getting the day off work — referee John Sculli suddenly collapsed on the court.
"It was kind of a shock," Copeland said. "I've never seen anyone fall out like that."
Copeland rushed into play, giving Sculli CPR chest compressions for 14 minutes until medics arrived. Those crucial moments likely saved his life.
The referee later learned he had a massive heart attack that usually has a 1% survival rate.
"Without a doubt, without him, I don't survive this," Sculli said. "No question."
