Triad woman honored after giving life-saving CPR to husband in cardiac arrest

A cardiac arrest survivor and his wife got the chance to thank first responders for saving his life.

On June 28, Johnny Martin collapsed at home with his wife, Kathy, there. She called 911 and with help from telecommunicators, gave bystander CPR, which she had learned as a Girl Scout.

Within six minutes, members of the Piney Grove FD and Forsyth County Fire Department were on scene to continue the life-saving. EMS paramedics arrived soon after.

Johnny Martin had cardiac surgery and is recovering strongly, with no lasting effects from the episode.

Only around 10% of people survive these cardiac episodes. Johnny was able to, due to quick CPR from his wife.

Kathy was honored with the CPR Save Award by the fire department and Johnny bought her a brand new car.

First responders said this incident stresses the importance of learning CPR. You can receive certification through training with the Red Cross.
