Teenager saved a stranger using CPR training in Nottinghamshire

Quick-thinking Mansfield teenager helped save stranger's life.

'Knowing CPR, I jumped in to give them the best chance of survival'

A student from Manor Academy has been hailed a hero after performing lifesaving CPR on a stranger. Year 10 pupil Ethan stepped up when a local resident collapsed in the street.

Ethan was working in a neighbour's garden when he heard a call for help and rushed to the scene. Finding the person unconscious on the ground, he calmly instructed others to move them onto a flat surface before checking for breathing.

Finding no pulse, Ethan immediately started CPR and helped coordinate the search for a nearby defibrillator. He was joined by a local teacher and a hospital carer, with the trio taking turns to deliver compressions for six minutes.

Ethan estimates he performed between 600 and 800 compressions before the ambulance team arrived at the scene. Paramedics confirm that the quick actions of the group kept the person's heart in a 'shockable rhythm' until they arrived.

After being rushed to hospital for treatment, the patient is now in a stable condition and recovering well. Grateful family members have since personally contacted Ethan to thank him for his incredible bravery and swift response.

Ethan credits his lifesaving skills to a training session he previously attended with the East Midlands Ambulance Service. He'd become interested in a career as a paramedic after witnessing their work with members of his family.

"While walking down the street I was faced with most people’s worst nightmare," said Ethan. " I had to stay calm and jump in, knowing what to do, and I am proud to say I gave the injured person the best chance possible."

"If faced with the situation, I would do it again in a heartbeat. I would encourage everyone to attend a CPR/BLS training course as this can truly save lives. The comments from the individual's family have worth more than any reward.

"Hopefully you will see me in green soon as helping others is my passion." He now hopes to set up community workshops focusing on the basics of CPR and the use of defibrillators.

Manor Academy headteacher, Rob Gladwin, is 'truly proud' of Ethan and his actions. He said: "We are very lucky to have a student at the Academy who expresses our values in such a way publicly as well as display their bravery and confidence in way that has saved the life of a member of our community."
