Covington mother thanks police officer who helped save her son after he fell in pool
A mother in Covington is thanking the Covington Police Department for the actions of one of its officers who helped revive her young son after the child fell into a swimming pool last week.
Dana Atlow said that after multiple attempts by other people to save her 1-and-a-half-year-old son, Nathan, Covington Police Officer Michael Hess successfully revived him.
Atlow was getting ready to leave the pool at her apartment complex in Covington with her kids on the evening of July 8 when Nathan went into the water.
Atlow said she had been gathering her towel and keys when she saw Nathan was in the pool. She quickly dove in to grab the child. But when she got him out of the pool, Nathan wasn't moving, she said.
"I was like, I don't know what to do, I don't know CPR," Atlow said.
Atlow said she called 911 and her cousin tried CPR. When that didn't work, she knocked on two neighbors' doors. One of the neighbors also tried CPR, but it didn't seem to work, she said.
She said Covington police arrived within a minute or two after she called. Hess ran to Nathan, patted him on his back and managed to get the water out and successfully revive him, she said.
Her son is now in good health, Atlow said, and she posted a photo of Nathan with Hess on Facebook, thanking him. Still, she said she shudders to think what might have happened if Hess had not arrived when he did.
"I thank them so much," she said.
In a Facebook post the Covington Police Department shared, Atlow called Hess "our hero" and said "this man really brought my baby back to life."
Hess wasn't immediately available for comment Monday.
But Kevin Collins, deputy chief of the Covington Police Department said he was happy for the family and Nathan.
"We're just glad that the little guy is OK and he's back with his family and we were able to be there," Collins said.
