CARO, MI – An 82-year-old Cass City man is recovering in the hospital after a passing motorist jumped to his aid after a medical emergency in Tuscola County.
Troopers with the Michigan State Police Caro post were dispatched shortly after 3:30 p.m. Monday, July 27, to East Caro Road (M-81) in Almer Township, just outside of Caro, for a personal injury crash.
Tuscola County Central Dispatch advised police that the man was not breathing.
The man’s vehicle had left the roadway and traveled several hundred feet before it came to a stop in a farm field.
A witness who had stopped performed CPR on the man.
Troopers took over CPR on the man who was unconscious and not breathing. The man was in full cardiac arrest.
Lifesaving measures continued including the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and CPR until ambulance and fire crews arrived on scene.
The man was eventually removed from the scene and taken to a local hospital for additional treatment. He was listed in critical, but stable condition.
The man was headed east on East Caro Road when he suffered the medical emergency.
The witness, a 42-year-old Gagetown man, was in a trailing vehicle when he observed the vehicle go off the roadway and into the field.
“Without doubt the Gagetown man helped save a life by stopping his vehicle, traversing through the farm field, and assisting the driver,” according to a Michigan State Police statement. “After calling 911 he removed the 82-year-old man from his vehicle and started performing CPR.”
The Caro Police Department, Caro Fire Department, Mobile Medical Response, and Tuscola County Sheriff’s Office assisted troopers on scene.
