Kyle woman praises dispatcher for life-saving guidance during husband's cardiac arrest

A Kyle woman thanked a Hays County Sheriff's Office dispatcher Thursday for helping save her husband's life after he went into cardiac arrest in August.

Eden Dunn, an emergency communications officer, received a 911 call at approximately 2:32 a.m. Aug. 19 from a woman whose 35-year-old husband was unconscious and not breathing. Dunn immediately dispatched emergency personnel and calmly guided the caller through CPR instructions until paramedics arrived seven minutes later.

The man spent 17 days in the hospital but survived.

Ascension Seton Hays Hospital honored Dunn, San Marcos/Hays County EMS, Kyle Fire Department and hospital medical staff Oct. 9, presenting them with awards for their response. The family attended and met Dunn in person, describing the dispatcher as "so calm and helpful" during the emergency.

"They undergo months of intensive training and handle life-and-death calls every day," Sheriff Anthony Hipolito said. "Their work may happen behind the scenes, but they are the true lifeline of our community."

All Hays County dispatchers are trained in emergency medical dispatch through the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch and recertify every two years, according to the sheriff's office.
