Huntsville Heart Walk aims to boost CPR skills, heart health awareness
Thousands are expected at Huntsville's Heart Walk, where the American Heart Association will offer hands-on CPR training and survivor stories to boost heart health.
The American Heart Association is turning bystanders into lifesavers this weekend as thousands are expected to gather in Huntsville for the new Heart Walk experience focused on CPR training, survivor stories and community action.
The Huntsville Heart Walk will take place Saturday, May 9, at Big Spring Park, bringing together more than 3,000 participants for what organizers describe as a hands-on, participant-centered event designed to boost CPR readiness and heart health awareness.
FOX54’s Mo Carter will serve as master of ceremonies for the opening program, which will feature local heart and stroke survivors sharing their stories before the walk begins.
Organizers say a key feature of the event is the “Be Extraordinary” area, where attendees can practice Hands-Only CPR and take part in the Lifesaver Challenge, which teaches the technique in about 90 seconds. Participants are also encouraged to take simple heart-healthy steps and support fundraising efforts tied to cardiovascular research and education.
The American Heart Association says more than 350,000 people suffer cardiac arrest outside of hospitals each year, and nearly 90% do not survive. However, immediate bystander CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival, making public training efforts critical.
The Huntsville Heart Walk begins at 8 a.m., with the opening ceremony scheduled for 8:45 a.m. and the walk starting at 9 a.m.
