CPR lessons being taught at Husker Harvest Days
At Husker Harvest Days you can learn life-saving skills of hands-only CPR. The American Red Cross is teaching any and everyone that comes through the health tent how to properly do it.
Participants go through steps first by starting with seeing if the person is conscious, followed by calling 911; then administrating CPR until medical professionals arrive. Red Cross official Susan Hensley said this is an important skill to learn.
“People go down, the kids go down playing sports, we got our farmers and ranchers out here that go down due to injury; their heart stops and we try to teach them what to do until they the ambulance come to help them,” said Hensley.
Hensley said if you live in a rural area, learning CPR is vital.
“They might be out there by themselves for a longtime,” said Hensley. “Our only hope is that somebody comes to help them because you tired after a while doing the compressions and so they can relieve back and forth. You keep on doing it until the ambulance shows up.”
Hensley is a registered nurse and explains why CPR is effective.
“It’s been proven it’s 95 percent effective. I know that we’re making the blood go to the brain and the organs and we’re getting air into them which we need; so it helps.”
Hensley said to be certified in CPR, visit the American Red Cross website. There’s four hours of online training and four hours in-person on a mannequin.
