Burkburnett Fire Department trains John Tower students in hands-only CPR
BURKBURNETT (KFDX/KJTL) — A classroom lesson in Burkburnett went beyond reading and writing, and into lifesaving skills. Students at John Tower Elementary School Learned hands-only CPR in an interactive way.
The lesson was all about action. Students were learning how to respond in an emergency, and they did it in a way that’s both engaging and easy to understand.
Third through fifth graders took part in hands-only CPR training led by the Burkburnett Fire Department and a registered nurse. Using their Chromebooks, students scanned a QR code that helped guide their compressions, giving instant feedback as they practiced, telling them to speed up, slow down, or push harder.
Teachers say the interactive element is making a big impact and allows the students to learn in real time. For many students, it’s building confidence while showing them just how important this skill is.
“I think it’s important so that way you can maybe like teach other people how to do it, or like if you’re in a situation where someone just collapsed, then you can save their life,” Brooklynn Flores, 4th-grade student at John Tower Elementary School, said.
School leaders say they hope programs like this continue, helping students gain skills that could one day make a life-saving difference.
If you’d like to become CPR certified, check for classes at the local YMCA, the American Heart Association, and your local fire departments.
