American Heart Association adds Pearl Jam's "Evenflow" to growing repertoire of hands-only CPR songs

American Heart Association adds Pearl Jam's "Evenflow" to growing repertoire of hands-only CPR songs

The American Heart Association recently added Pearl Jam's "Evenflow" to our collective repertoire of songs with 100 to 120 beats per minute that perfectly accompany hands-only CPR. They explain that 100 to 120 beats per minute is the "same rate at which you should perform compressions when administering CPR." On their Instagram post promoting "Evenflow," which VICE reports has 105 beats per minute, the AHA wrote:

Break out the flannel shirts and ripped jeans and turn on some "Pearl Jam," and learn how to save a life with Hands-Only CPR.

If you see a teen or adult collapse, call 911 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of "Even Flow."

VICE explains that the go-to CPR song for years has been the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive," since the "infectious 'Ah, ah, ah, ah, stayin' alive, stayin' alive' can be timed perfectly to chest compressions." But music lovers and bystanders called upon to administer CPR don't have to stick to the Bee Gees - there's a whole world of songs with the appropriate beats per minute.

On this AHA hands-only CPR playlist posted on the AHA website, you'll find about 30 songs to choose from, including "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees, plus "Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson, "Ring of Fire" by Johnny Cash, and "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen.

The AHA also hosts a Spotify playlist called "Don't Drop the Beat" that includes 218 songs from a broader range of genres: Dolly Parton's "Jolene," Chappell Roan's "Pink Pony Club," Kendrick Lamar's "Squabble Up," Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl," Charli xcx's "Spring Breakers," Sabrina Carpenter's "Espresso," BTS's "Dynamite," Florence + The Machine's "Shake It Out," Stevie Wonder's "Superstition," Billie Eilish's "Birds of a Feather," Garbage's "Stupid Girl," Rascal Flatts' "Summer Nights," Miley Cyrus' "Flowers," Halsey's "Now or Never," Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" (featuring Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers), and plenty of Taylor Swift. My favorite song on the playlist is the Beastie Boys' "Intergalactic"-that's definitely what I'd choose if I were ever to give CPR. The one song I'd never want someone to use on me if I needed CPR is Europe's "The Final Countdown." I mean, I guess it's darkly funny, but it would hit too close to home in the moment.

The American Heart Association consistently adds music suggestions for CPR on its Instagram - the latest addition is Ella Langley's "Choosin' Texas" (112 bpm), and it recently reposted Bad Bunny's "EL CLúB" (111 bpm), which it suggested last year.
