Training firm acts on stigma over female CPR

It has emerged recently that women are less likely than men to receive CPR – which involves pumping the chest to restore heart function – than men in public emergencies.

CPR can have a direct impact on chances of survival when a patient’s heart has stopped.

Now Puzzled Training has introduced female manikins to its training packages in a move to help improve understanding and confidence among those who take CPR training – with the intention of closung the gender gap among those getting immediate help when suffering a cardiac health emergency.

“Cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, and everyone deserves the best chance of survival,” said Anne-Louise Everton of Puzzled Training.

The organisation took action after the disparity emerged via recent BBC publicity.

“Following the BBC’s findings, it’s clear that training must reflect reality. Our female manikins help build confidence and remove any awkwardness, so people are ready to act quickly when every second counts,” she said.

The company, which runs public courses and group bookings, believes inclusive training equipment is vital in improving survival rates. Traditional manikins have been male, a factor potentially contributing to the apparent reluctance among some to act on female patients.

Puzzled Training operates from Rotherham and offers flexible sessions suitable for workplaces, community groups and individuals. Courses can be booked online via their website or by contacting the team directly.
