SUMMIT, NJ — Dramatic video released this week (and posted below) shows police officers pull up to a house in Summit and save an unresponsive baby from choking.
The police were called on July 5. They were met at the foot of a driveway by the mother holding the baby. The infant "was turning blue and unable to cry or breathe," according to the city.
In the video, an officer parks and runs across the street to the mother. She sobs, "I was just giving him vitamins." The officer takes the child, who doesn't move, and verifies: "He's choking, you think?"
The officer administers careful back blows and chest thrusts to dislodge the material. Eighteen seconds after the first blow, the child starts gurgling. The officer continues working on the baby, then says, "OK, he's making some noise." The mother tells the officers the baby doesn't usually cry.
The baby was transported to a local hospital for observation and made a full recovery.
Seconds matter when a child can't breathe because of choking or for another reason. Procedures for an infant and older child can differ. Local medical providers often offer courses. In an emergency, dial 911.
Portions of the body camera footage below were redacted in order to protect the privacy of all parties involved.
