Metro bus driver performs CPR on teen shooting victim in East Price Hill

A Metro bus driver performed CPR on a 14-year-old boy who was shot in East Price Hill on Tuesday night.

Briona Akins was driving near Glenway and Warsaw Avenues when she noticed a commotion and saw the wounded teen on the ground.

She stopped her bus and began helping him before first responders arrived.

“I knew where to place my hands. I knew to check his pulse,” Akins said. “It was a faint heartbeat, but it was still beating through his chest.”

Akins said her faith helped her remain calm during the emergency.

She attributes her CPR training from a previous job for a yellow bus service, adding the lessons came back to her when the teen needed help.

“I don’t think I’m a hero,” Akins said. “I think I was in the right place at the right time.”

Her mother, Renee Akins, said the response reflected her daughter’s caring nature.

“She has always had a kind heart, a soft heart,” she said. “She’ll do anything for you.”

The teen remains in the hospital. No arrests had been announced in the shooting.

Akins said she hopes to connect with the teen and his family. She also encourages others to receive CPR training.
