Medical experts urge people to learn CPR during Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month

October is Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month.

The months aims to inform the public about warning signs, risk factors and what to do in the event of a cardiac emergency.

The American Red Cross encourages everyone to take a CPR class and learn how to use an AED, so they can learn how to help save a life when someone goes into cardiac arrest wen minutes matter.

More than 350,000 people experience out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the U.S. and roughly 90% of them die according to the American Red Cross. Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating normally because of abnormal electrical activity. Every second counts, so it’s important for people to be trained how to perform CPR and use an AED. Immediate CPR delivered by someone can nearly double a person’s chance of survival.

Dr. Jonathan Esclovon with Christus Health appeared on the noon show to explain.
