‘I’m just grateful': Co-worker performs CPR, helps save tree trimmer shocked by power line

A tree trimmer in Tennessee is grateful to be alive after being shocked by a power line during a recent job.

Jonathon Lane said his workday started on Dec. 9 like any other day. He and his coworkers were tasked that day with trimming trees near power lines along Red Bone Way in Sevier County.

“Everything felt like it was just normal,” he said.

Lane has only been working as a tree trimmer for over a month after leaving the service industry.

He said he just wanted a job that got him outside and found that in trimming trees.

But that Monday, his outdoor work changed quickly.

“I remember going to work and breaking down the truck. I remember pulling up to the road, and then after that, I don’t really remember anything about the accident,” Lane said.

According to Lane, he was walking around the bucket truck when he was shocked and he didn’t wake up until he was in the ICU.

“I was confused, I had felt something had happened, but I didn’t know to what extent or what exactly happened,” Lane said.

Lanes' girlfriend, Nikki Cosby, received a call that day telling her of his condition.

“My heart stopped, I didn’t know to what extent it was, but they told me they got him back in the back of the ambulance,” she said. “So, I knew it was very severe.”

Lane was intubated, but luckily not for long. He eventually called Cosby saying he was up and walking, and ready to head home.

“I never thought I’d be in a position like that, I mean it’s scary,” he said.

Lane said he was given a 20% chance to live when he got to the ICU. He thanks a co-worker who knew CPR for helping save his life along with another worker who ran to flag down the EMS crew.

“Just be grateful, anything can happen, no one wants anything to happen of course but, anything can happen,” he said.

Lane is now off work for six months. He doesn’t know what the future holds but is thankful to see another day and is looking forward to celebrating the holidays.

“I’m just grateful. I’m blessed. I just feel like everybody should take it one day at a time,” he said.
