THE STREETS — You ever see something that is otherworldly amazing and no one believes you because it's just too insane? The kind of thing that changes your life? The kind of thing you can't wait to tell someone but the minute you do they say you're either a liar or your eyes tricked you?
I had hit up Nickelcade in the Sandy Mall. Those who know what I'm talking about know how next-level awesome that place was.
I walked one summer day with so many nickels that my belt couldn't keep my cargo shorts up on its own. My friend with me took a left to Cruisin' USA while I hung a right to Area 51. As I did, I saw the most amazing sight my young eyes had ever beheld.
I saw the one and only Benny the Jet Rodriguez. Or at least the actor who played him, Mike Vitar.
For those out there not educated in the classics, he was in "The Sandlot," which was probably the coolest movie I'd seen up to that point of my life. He was wearing a Marlins hat and a tank top. I stood there in awe, I mean, it was Benny the Jet!
I couldn't speak, I just saw him walk by and leave the arcade. I ran to my friend Curtis to tell him, but he just said there is no way that was him and why on earth would he be hanging out at the Nickelcade in Sandy? Fair points, I suppose, but I know what my eyes saw and more than 20 years later I'm sticking to that story and Curtis still thinks I'm a liar.
If it weren't for this video, the people who helped save this baby elephant in Thailand would have a Benny the Jet problem on their hands because no one would believe it.
This baby elephant was hit by a motorcycle while crossing the road. A rescue worker went into action and gave CPR to the elephant.
After some work and effort, the baby shakily got up and then was taken to a facility to be treated. The elephant was OK and returned to the wild to be with its family.
I've watched this video several times now and it's still hard to believe, but there it is — it happened. Just like The Jet hung out at the Sandy Mall playing video games for just a nickel each.
