Division of Motor Vehicles "immediately" suspends Colorado Springs driving school testing certificate

DENVER, Colo. (KKTV) - Citing dangerous testing shortcuts, financial exploitation, and manipulation of the DMV’s appointment system, the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles suspended the testing certificate for the Academy School of Driving (ASD) in Colorado Springs on Friday.

The investigation of the privately-owned Certified Driving Education and Testing School is “active and continuing,” according to the DMV.

The current investigations by the Motor Vehicle Investigations Unit (MVIU) and Driver Testing and Education (DTE) began in November of last year. Investigators found issues going back to at least March 2025.

Central issues included problems with testing, with external “coordinators” physically marking answers for applicants to ensure passing scores on the written test.

The state of Colorado mandates 15-minute behind-the-wheel driving tests. Investigators found those tests were being shortened to two-to-four minutes, with testers entering falsified route and duration data in the state system.

DMV investigators also found ASD charged “exorbitant” fees of $550 to $600 for guaranteed results and manipulated the DMV appointment system using placeholder names to secure limited appointments.

Alongside the suspension, the DMV is also notifying 460 people of license actions and reviewing specific ASD employees for disciplinary action.

Students in the process of doing their driving training at ASD will have to finish their instruction at another driving school. There may be future funds available to refund the cost of some ASD paid fees.
