CHICOPEE, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- Two Chicopee police officers are being hailed as heroes after saving a toddler who wandered in a swimming pool. The two police officers saved a two-year-old girl’s life on Saturday, performing CPR on the spot.

“…Such a wonderful, wonderful outcome,” said Chicopee Police spokesperson Donna Liszka.

Two Chicopee police officers are now being hailed as heroes after saving a toddler’s life over the weekend. Just after 7 p.m. on Saturday, police responded to Sarah Jane Sherman Memorial State Pool area for a missing two-year-old girl.

“When they had arrived, the father of the child had located his daughter inside the pool and alerted our officers,” Liszka explained.

That’s when Officer Jackek Wanat and Officer Flordamaris Delarosa jumped into action and performing life-saving CPR on the spot.

“The child was unresponsive prior to the CPR efforts. The child began breathing and crying,” Liszka added.

The pool is closed to the public until opening day in just under two weeks. It’s still unclear how the toddler wandered into the pool. Police told Western Mass News the parents both thought the other was watching the child. The situation is still under investigation. Liszka told Western Mass News officers are trained to handle this exact situation.

“We credit our quick dispatching from our Westcomm dispatchers and our officer’s response to that area…We have in-house training several times a year for different certifications including CPR,” Liszka noted.

She said the department is thankful for a happy ending.

“We’re very proud…We are also very happy for the family and that little girl,” Liszka said.

The child was taken to the hospital yesterday and was released. She is expected to make a full recovery.

The incident is under investigation.
