High school students across the area were given free health screenings at Bank of America Stadium on Saturday.
The annual ‘Heart of a Champion’ Day, an annual free sports health screening and educational program, was held.
At least 100 high school athletes from North and South Carolina went through a comprehensive physical exam, including an electrocardiogram that looks for underlying issues that could cause serious issues if they go unnoticed.
Atrium Health has held the event since 2008, but this is the first time it’s ever been held at Bank of America Stadium.
Heart health has been a focus for the Panthers as they recently hosted a CPR class that featured an appearance from Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, who had to be revived on the field after his heart stopped after a tackle last season.
The event has also maximized its impact for lower-income families and those who can’t afford comprehensive testing.
Mallard Creek basketball player Chris Johnson says the experience gives him peace of mind.
“It settles me to know that I am okay and all parts of my body,” he said.
Kenny Moore, a former Carolina Panthers wide receiver, saw his former position coach bring his daughter in.
“Being able to allow these kids to know what they are, their bill health is and get ready for the season,” Moore said.
The testing only takes nearly 2 hours.
