The Middlesex YMCA will be hosting a recognition event for several first responders and YMCA lifeguards who are credited for saving the life of an elderly man while swimming at the Middlesex YMCA.
First responders, including YMCA lifeguards and a Middlesex Health paramedic, are set to be formally recognized for their actions that helped save the life of a 67-year-old man who suffered sudden cardiac arrest while swimming at the Middlesex YMCA pool, officials said.
“While on duty, lifeguards identified a male patron in the shallow end of the pool who appeared unsteady and visibly distressed. Although initially responsive, the man’s condition rapidly deteriorated. Lifeguards immediately removed him from the water, placed him on a backboard, and determined he had no pulse or breathing.”
“They promptly began high-quality CPR and deployed an Automated External Defibrillator, delivering multiple shocks while maintaining continuous resuscitation. Their quick recognition, early CPR, and early defibrillation established the critical chain of survival before first responders arrived,” the YMCA said in a statement.
The man received seven defibrillation shocks and was transported to Middlesex Hospital to receive continued care. He has since made a full recovery and was discharged from the hospital four days after the event, officials said.
The recognition event will take place Jan. 5, at 10 a.m. at the Middlesex YMCA, inside the Hazen Conference Room. The man, who has not been identified, will also be present to thank the first responders for their lifesaving efforts, according to YMCA officials.
