4 News Now Exclusive: Students use CPR to save Lewis and Clark track coach's life

A high school track coach is recovering at Sacred Heart Medical Center after receiving life-saving CPR from two students.

During the Lewis and Clark track practice, the coach collapsed on the ground. The students' quick-thinking to perform CPR helped him be able to return to his family.

"I thought he was gone," Brody Graham said. "I thought he had died."

"It was [a] scary moment," Grant Lichfield said.

It's a situation these two students trained for, but never knew when they might need to use it.

"As we got closer, there might be some sort of emergency," Graham said.

Graham and Lichfield saw their coach, Mike Hadway, collapse on the ground and was unresponsive.

Graham and Lichfield knew exactly what they had to do. They called 911 and started CPR right then and there.

"We checked his pulse," Graham said. "It wasn't there. We started compressions as soon as we could. We had someone else call 911. We had another person grab our clothes in another area. We really worked as a team."

The students did what they could to save Coach Hadway until he was taken to the hospital.

"[I] really expected the worst on my way to the hospital," Josh Hadway, Mike's son, said.

Thanks to their quick actions, Coach Hadway was able to get his pulse back.

"Our family is super grateful that God puts those two kids there," Josh Hadway said. "They knew exactly what to do. They stepped up. They didn't hesitate. My dad wouldn't be alive if they didn't step up."

The family says Coach Hadway is now talking and recovering from the hospital. His son now wants others to know how to perform CPR because it could happen to anyone.

"It inspires me to get CPR certified," Josh Hadway said. "You always hear about CPR. In this case, it really made a difference."

"It's not just our coach," Graham said. "His someone's father and grandfather. Someone people who look up to. When you have that life saving tool, It's something really helpful to have."
