The Power of Preparedness: How CPR Training Helped a College Athlete Save Her Dad
A few months after NFL player Damar Hamlin’s cardiac arrest, the University of Pittsburgh trained its athletes in CPR and AED use—training that would prove lifesaving for soccer goalie Ellie Breech. Already familiar with CPR from her lifeguard days and her father Ed Breech’s stories as an ER nurse, Ellie refreshed her skills in spring 2023. That December, while home for winter break, Ellie sprang into action when Ed collapsed from cardiac arrest on Christmas morning. She performed CPR for nine minutes until emergency responders arrived. Though the AED couldn’t deliver a shock due to Ed’s heart rhythm, Ellie’s immediate response kept him alive until he could be placed on life support and eventually recover without brain damage.
Ed’s survival was a testament to the power of CPR and the importance of training. After 22 days in the hospital, he returned home, later joined by a new pug named George—his constant companion. Inspired by the experience, Ellie shifted her focus from engineering to medicine, driven by her father’s example and her own heroic actions. In February, she was honored at a Pitt basketball game by none other than Damar Hamlin. Their story highlights how CPR training can turn ordinary people into lifesavers. Make World Restart a Heart Day on October 16 a Day of Action
This fall the American Heart Association is urging families, schools, and workplaces to make World Restart a Heart Day a day of action by learning how to save a life.
Supported by the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation, this awareness day focuses on Hands-Only CPR training and the importance of immediate action to help save more lives from cardiac arrest globally.
Make World Restart a Heart Day a day of action:
- Take 90 seconds to learn CPR.
- Advocate for a cardiac emergency response plan (CERP) in your community.
- Raise awareness on social media using the hashtag #WorldRestartAHeart.
- Share your CPR story here.
Immediate CPR and defibrillation are key to doubling the survival rate of cardiac arrest by 2030, a primary goal for the American Heart Association’s second century.
Join the Nation of Lifesavers and take action this World Restart a Heart Day, by learning CPR and advocating for CERPs in your community so that together you can be prepared to save a life.

Training Center Site Review Results: January - September 2025
The American Heart Association conducted a series of Training Center (TC) Site reviews between January and September 2025 to assess compliance and quality across the Association Training Network. These reviews are triggered by complaints or failed unannounced course monitoring sessions and involve a two to three-hour meeting between TC leadership and the Association Compliance Team. The goal is to identify areas for improvement and ensure high standards in life-saving training. The data below summarizes the 2025 review outcomes for January through September:
- Number of TC Site reviews held: 10
- Number of TCs placed on probation: 10
- Number of TCs currently on probation from 2025 TC Site reviews: 7
- Number of TCs currently placed back on probation from past TC Site reviews: 2
- Number of TC Site reviews currently scheduled from October 2025 – November 2025: 4
Key compliance concerns identified during these reviews include a lack of oversight of sites and Instructors, failure to maintain or utilize the recommended training Faculty-to-Instructor ratios, and inadequate vetting of both Training Sites and Instructors. Additionally, many TCs do not confirm Instructor or student identification, although this is not currently required by the Association.
All reviews to date have resulted in action plans and probation periods, reinforcing the importance of maintaining strong oversight and quality assurance for CPR training offered across all TCs to improve cardiac arrest outcomes.
