'It was really scary': Lifeguard describes moment she rescued 5-year-old boy
A Massachusetts lifeguard on her lunch break recently jumped into action to save a 5-year-old who lost his floatation devices and began sinking in the deep end of a condo complex pool.
Alison Mammola, 19, told WHDH that she heard a commotion around 5 p.m. Sunday. When she saw the boy at the bottom of the pool, she said her "lifeguard instincts kicked in."
"He was in the 9 feet area and the pool is a 25-meter length," she said.
When Mammola reached the boy, she said he had no pulse. After mouth-to-mouth and two rounds of CPR, he began breathing on his own.
"I literally — a weight felt lifted from my chest and it was really scary, too, because thinking about how it could have ended in a different situation, but I was just happy that the boy was OK and that paramedics were able to take care of the rest," she said.
