Elderly Passenger Suffers Heart Attack On Running Train: How Ticket Checker's Prompt Save Him

A ticket checker’s swift response to a medical emergency has been credited with saving the life of an elderly passenger who suffered a heart attack during a long-distance train journey.

BP Karn, 65, was travelling with his brother from Darbhanga in Bihar to Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh on the Pawan Express when he suddenly experienced severe chest pain and collapsed. His brother quickly reported the emergency through the Railways’ RailMadad portal.

Upon receiving the alert, ticket checker Savind Kumar promptly arrived at the coach where Karn was located. Meanwhile, Karn’s brother contacted their family doctor, who advised him to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Kumar took immediate action, administering CPR for approximately 15 minutes while carefully following the doctor’s instructions.

The video from the incident shows Kumar diligently performing CPR until the passenger regained consciousness.

As the train approached Chhapra station, a medical team was already on standby due to the emergency alert. Karn was quickly taken off the train and admitted to a local hospital, where his condition is now stable.

Divisional Railway Manager Vivek Bhushan Sood announced that ticket checker Savind Kumar would be recognised for his lifesaving efforts, with a cash prize awarded in his honour. Railway authorities expressed their pride in Kumar's quick thinking and decisive action.

What Is CPR?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a critical emergency procedure used to save lives when a person’s heart stops beating and they are not breathing. Administering CPR within five minutes of a heart attack or cardiac arrest can be vital for survival.

CPR helps deliver oxygenated blood to the brain, preventing brain cells from dying, and stimulates the heart, potentially restoring its function and pulse.
