3-month-old Wichita boy's life saved by parents' recent CPR class
WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - Breanna Ashwood and Chris Roseman were sitting on their couch watching TV when suddenly an instinct kicked in. They felt the urge to check on Chance, napping in the other room.
"My only thought is God was like, hey, get up. Go check on him," said Ashwood. "When I first walked in there, I could tell his skin was really pale. And it just didn't look right. Like nothing looked right."
Chance was limp and wasn't breathing. But his mother's instinct, who just finished an EMT class this year, quickly kicked in to save him.
"I panicked for a minute. I grabbed him, and I was holding him. And I was like, shaking him like telling him to wake up. He wouldn't. And then it was like, Brianna, nope, you need to start CPR because you got to get him breathing again," said Ashwood.
Doctors are still running tests but suspect it was likely a case of SIDS, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
Via Christi childbirth educator Toni Howard said SIDS is all too common in infants.
"In 2015, this is the most recent statistic in the state of Kansas, almost 40,000 babies were born. 230 of those had passed by their six month birthday," said Howard. "The state of Kansas has formed several committees like the Maternal Infant Health Coalition. We offer a Baby Talk program to ensure moms know some of the things to reduce issues with SIDS."
And Chance's parents say lessons like this have already been life-saving.
"CPR, man. It's definitely, every parent should really know that. Every parent. I didn't know how crucial that was until that time came," said Roseman.
"Even if you think you'll never have to use it. That's great if you never have to," said Ashwood.
